Yes. A binaural beat is created when each ear hears a slightly different tone, so stereo headphones or earbuds are required. On a speaker the two tones mix in the air and the effect is lost. If you want to play through speakers, use the monaural or isochronic studio instead.
Start in the Alpha range (8 to 13 Hz) for calm focus, Theta (4 to 8 Hz) for relaxation and meditation, or Delta (1 to 4 Hz) for winding down toward sleep. Keep the carrier between about 200 and 400 Hz and the volume low. Short sessions of 10 to 20 minutes are a sensible first step.
